How to Prepare for Your First Tutoring Session
Investing in a tutor is investing in your future. There are a variety of options to suit you or your child’s needs. Choose between online tutoring services or a one-on-one tutoring session in the comfort of your home. Tutors can offer personalized education that’s tailored to the learning style of each individual. They understand the possible difficulties of learning and can adapt their methods accordingly. Apart from seeing your academic results improve, you will also become confident in your abilities to learn, understand and grow. Education is about becoming an independent individual that can add value to your community, country, or even the world. Here are just some of the benefits of having a private tutor:
- One-on-one personal interaction
- Individualized teaching style customized for the student
- Set your own pace for learning
- Ask questions that you won’t in class
- Elaborate on topics not understood in class
- Get extra practice, revise your work, and prepare for exams.
Our Tutoring Process
Starting your tutoring journey is a simple process. Strive Academics offers a free consultation session to discuss your academic needs and availability. After your consultation, we will match you up with a tutor that specializes in your field who is a good fit for your personality. Specify whether you’d like to receive online or at-home tutoring, your availability and whether you need help for academic subjects or test preparation. Even though your tutor will be responsible for setting up an individualized study plan for your success, there are still steps you can take from your side to assure the best results during tutoring, depending on whether you are attending the sessions as an adult or managing the process for your child or another student. What Can You do To Prepare for Your First Tutoring Session?
If You Are The Student:
1) Get to Know Your Tutor
You and your tutor will be spending a lot of time together, so it’s important to develop a good relationship. The first tutoring session isn’t a social event, but it’s good to ask questions and get to know each other’s personalities. That will help them understand how to work with you during study sessions or how to encourage you to focus and work harder.2) Understand Your Tutor’s Role
Your relationship with your tutor will be smooth sailing if you understand the role they will play in your education. A tutor is not a lecturer, so you cannot expect to sit back and relax while they repeat phrases in the hope that it will stick. This is a one-on-one learning session which will allow you to engage with the content and really grasp the concepts. Make sure to come to sessions with questions about specific concepts or homework assigned by your teacher or tutor. Prepare yourself to work with your tutor, as this is a combined effort.3) Get Enough Sleep
In order to make the best of your tutoring session, see that you get at least 8 hours of sleep the night before. Schedule your sessions during a time that you know you can be productive and alert. For some, this could be early in the morning and, for others, late afternoon or in the evening.4) Always be On Time
It’s important to honor your tutoring sessions. If you won’t be able to attend a session, make sure to notify your tutor well in advance. Both parties should respect each other’s time, and even though you might feel like skipping a session on short notice, your tutor could have used that time to educate another learner. Our tutors always give at least 24 hours notice, and if they miss a session without notifying you, the next session is on us.5) Know Your Limits
Making a list of all the areas you are struggling in can really assist the tutor in creating a study plan. The tutor is there to help you, and won’t judge your limitations or how far you are behind with the work. Be open and honest regarding your struggles, and list the areas that you feel need focus and attention.6) Provide Feedback and Academic History
Help your tutor pave your road to success by sharing previous grades, feedback, reviews and reports about your work. Sometimes, a comment or note from a teacher or educator can be valuable for the tutoring process. The more you give, the more the tutor has to work with in helping you succeed. If you are a Parent:
1) Communicate Expectations
This goes for both what is expected of the tutor, as well as your child. Determining the needs from the start will help all parties come up with a realistic, achievable plan for the student. As a parent, it’s important to explain to your child why you’ve invested in the services of a tutor. Whether it’s because both parents are busy with work and cannot assist with homework, or you feel like your child isn’t getting the one-on-one attention in the classroom that he/she needs. Setting clear expectations ensures that everyone is on the same page and that the time with your tutor is tailored to help you reach your goals. If your child has learning disabilities, this also needs to be communicated to us at Strive Academics so that we can match you with the ideal tutor for your situation.2) Encourage Education
Your child may not always get excited about learning, especially if this is something they are struggling with at school. Showcase a positive attitude towards learning in the household. Many times students learn by example, so if you are currently doing additional courses to further your career – tell your kids about it, and the fact that it excites you. Talk to them about what excites you about their progress in school. Plan fun learning activities. The sky’s the limit!3) Gather Necessary Materials
Involved parents can do wonders for the progress of their kids. Make sure that your child has all the textbooks and resources that they need when going to their first tutoring session. If the tutoring sessions will take place at home, you can organize a study space that’s quiet and is set up with all the stationery and supplies needed during the session. At Strive Academics, there will be no surprises during the first session. Everything will already have been discussed, prepared and planned during your free consultation session. We like to get straight to business and help you get on top of the work you’ve been struggling with, classes you missed, or preparing for that exam that you are planning to ace!View our resources

Like how you gave tips for both sides. Everyone needs to go prepared to achieve the best results.
Agreed. Learning is a team effort!
These are great tips! I have 3 daughters who are so very different strengthens and weaknesses. I will definitely have to keep this in mind if the need presents itself.
We’re glad to help!
This blog post is awesome, even for college students like myself. I often rely on tutoring to get thru some of my harder classes.
Thanks for the compliment! Tutoring can be a great fit for anyone at any stage or life or any level of aptitude.
This is a good resource for those needing a tutor. I was a tutor in college to other college students and many of those students would have benefitted more from this knowledge.
We’re glad to hear you found this useful!
My son has been struggling with a couple different classes and I was wondering if we should get a tutor. You wrote in the article that you should look for a tutor that can accommodate to the style and pace that your child learns best with. If they personalize their lesson plans, my son would be able to make the most of the tutoring and really start succeeding in school.
