ACT/SAT/GRE Vocabulary List 2

  1. Aloof – adjective – Distant, either physically or emotionally
    • She remained aloof from the rest of the team, choosing not to interact with them on a personal level.
  2. Efficient – adjective – Being effective without wasting time, effort, or expense
    • By streamlining the production process, the company was able to become more efficient while reducing costs.
  3. Burgeon – verb – To grow or increase rapidly
    • The number of tourists in this area has burgeoned in recent years due to the increase in advertising campaigns.
  4. Facilitate – verb – To make an action or process easier
    • Having a good software can facilitate the management of the inventory system and save you a lot of time.
  5. Infer – verb – To conclude from evidence and reasoning
    • Based on the evidence presented, we can infer that the suspect was at the scene of the crime.
  6. Exert – verb – To put to use or make great effort
    • She had to exert a lot of effort to finish the marathon but was proud of herself for completing it.
  7. Erode – verb – To grind down or deteriorate
    • The constant rainfall eroded the soil on the cliff, causing it to collapse.
  8. Proficient – adjective – Skilled in doing or using something
    • As a proficient guitar player, he was able to play complex songs with ease.
  9. Digress – verb – To leave the main subject temporarily, either in writing or in speech
    • He tends to digress when speaking, often going off on tangents that have nothing to do with the main topic.
  10. Devoid – adjective – Entirely lacking something
    • The barren wasteland was devoid of any signs of life.
  11. Orient – verb – To position towards a point or landmark
    • The map was oriented to the north, making it easier to navigate through the city.
  12. Compose – verb – To write or create
    • She was able to compose a beautiful piece of music that captured the emotions of the audience.
  13. Immobile – adjective – Not able to move/be moved
    • Due to his injuries, he was immobile for several weeks and had to rely on others for assistance.
  14. Skeptical – adjective – Not easily convinced; having doubts
    • The scientists were skeptical of the new theory, as it contradicted the existing research in the field.
  15. Emit – verb – To send out
    • The chimney emitted smoke into the sky, signaling that a fire was burning inside the house.
  16. Void – noun – A completely empty space
    • The empty room was a void of silence, with no sound or movement to be heard.
  17. Potent – adjective – Having great power or effect
    • The potent medicine was able to cure the disease in a matter of days.
  18. Notion – noun – A belief about something
    • He had the notion that he could succeed without putting in any effort but soon realized that it was not possible.
  19. Precede – verb – To come before something
    • The introduction of new technology often precedes a period of adjustment for workers.
  20. Contour – noun – An outline representing the shape of something
    • The contour of the mountain range was clearly visible against the backdrop of the setting sun.
