5 Things You Need to Know About the ACT Science Section

The Science section of the ACT may seem like a challenge to you. Perhaps it’s because you don’t know where to start. Maybe the big words are throwing you off your game. Perhaps you’re not sure how to interpret the information on the chart. Whatever the case, the Science section is much more straightforward than you think. Follow these tips to increase your score.

  1. You will have 35 minutes to answer 40 questions. That’s about:
    1. 52 seconds per question
  2. Most information you need will be given in the passages and charts/graphs. Don’t worry if you do not have a lot of background in science or don’t understand the terms.
  3. Pay attention to the graphs and charts first. Most of the questions can be answered by looking at and comparing the information contained in the graphs/charts. Only read the information in the passage if absolutely necessary.
  4. Don’t overthink any technical terms you are given. You don’t need to know what it means, you just need to know what the passage is saying about it.
  5. Do the conflicting viewpoints passage last as it tends to be the most time-consuming one for students.
